Claude Code has significantly improved file search efficiency by creating a detailed map of my files, reducing search times by 96%. This tool turned my computer into a personal knowledge base, making it easier to find files using natural language.
The process involved creating a hierarchy of README files, which act as a table of contents pointing to smaller READMEs inside important folders. These READMEs describe what files are about, include keywords, and explain relationships between files stored in different places.
I started by giving Claude Code a specific prompt to explore my directory structure, understand its contents, and create a hierarchy of README files. The process was divided into four phases: exploring the directory, creating README files, optimizing for search, and validating the hierarchy.
In the first phase, Claude Code recursively examined my directory structure, identifying important folders and inspecting file contents to understand their purpose. It skipped caches, dependencies, system files, and irrelevant directories, ensuring it didn’t read sensitive information unnecessarily.
The second phase involved creating detailed README files in the root directory and important subdirectories. Each README explained what the folder contained, described important files, and linked to relevant subdirectories and documents using relative Markdown paths. This made it easier to navigate and find files based on natural-language descriptions and keywords.
The third phase focused on organizing the READMEs so an AI agent could start with the root README and progressively narrow down which directory to inspect. This included creating a section called ‘Where to find things’ with descriptions based on likely natural-language searches, ensuring the index was concise and efficient to navigate.
Finally, the validation phase tested the hierarchy with five realistic natural-language file-finding queries. Claude Code reported which READMEs led to the relevant file and whether the result was correct. This process ensured the system was effective and reliable.
The results were impressive. Claude Code created 125 README files, covering 23 directories and skipping 15 irrelevant ones. The system successfully reduced the time it took to find files by 96%, making it a practical solution for anyone struggling with file organization.
This approach is particularly useful for those with a large number of files and folders, such as students, professionals, or anyone dealing with extensive digital archives. By creating a personal knowledge base, Claude Code has made file management more efficient and less time-consuming.
